Jeju reach Peace Cup quarter finals

Jeju United 1-0 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

Highlights video: www.jeju-utd.com (Internet Explorer only)

Despite spending much of the second half with just ten men, Jeju United were victorious in an entertaining game at Jeju World Cup Stadium last night. With Jeonbuk needing to win by two or more goals in order to make the last eight of the Peace Cup, it was an open game which either side could have won.

The game was somewhat spoiled by the bizarre refereeing performance of Hong Jin-Ho. The referee booked Oveira for diving in the fifth minute although the Brazilian striker appeared to have been fouled. The referee ignored similar incidents in the Jeju penalty area. Mr Hong also harshly sent Ricardo off in the 53rd minute for a second bookable offence.

With Jeonbuk needing goals, the first half was open and entertaining with both sides threatening to break the deadlock. Shim Young-Sung should have broke the deadlock on seventeen minutes after a Ricardo pass beat the offside trap to play him in on goal. However the young attacker shot straight at the keeper, missing a chance he should have scored.

Jeonbuk's best chance of the half came on 39 minutes when Lee Dong-Guk whipped in a threatening cross which captain Lee Dong-Sik did just enough defensively to distract Ha Dae-Sung from converting. An entertaining first half came to an end with neither side having managed to get on the score sheet.

Jeju broke the deadlock just five minutes in to the second half with a deserved, albeit forunate, goal. Defender Lee Sang-Ho crossed low in to the penalty area from the left, with the ball hitting the foot of defender Kim Sang-Sik who deflected the ball in to the net. Goalkeeper Kwon Sun-Tae was wrong footed but made an admirable effort at making a save, however he couldn't reach the ball in time.

It was pretty much game over at that point as Jeonbuk knew they now needed to score three if they were to progress to the quarter finals. They did however continue to attack and were buoyed by the 53rd minute sending off of Ricardo. Luiz Enrique went close to scoring with a low 25 yard shot which just went wide. Aside from that Jeonbuk failed to create any clear cut chances.

The game finished 1-0 and as Group B winners, Jeju can now look forward to a two legged quarter final in July where they will face either FC Seoul, Suwon, Pohang or Ulsan.

Jeju United Vs Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Preview (Peace Cup)

Jeju United Vs Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - 7pm, Wednesday, 27th May 2009 (Jeju World Cup Stadium, Seogwipo)

Jeju enter this match knowing that any result except a Jeonbuk victory by two or more goals will be sufficient to advance to the quarter finals of this season's Peace Cup.

Whilst normally this would make supporters confident of Jeju's chances, the humiliating 5-0 drubbing inflicted by Jeonbuk at the start of the month is still fresh in the memory. United have improved greatly over the course of the month though, and with the injury crisis easing, they will present a much harder proposition to Jeonbuk this time around.

Ultimately the match will be decided by how much the respective sides want to win this one. The Peace Cup is not a priority for Jeonbuk and will hopefully mean that they field a weakened team.

Previous meetings:
Jeju have a poor record against Jeonbuk in the K-League
they have only achieved one win and a draw in the last 3 years having lost 5 games in the process:

30th Aug 2006
Jeju United 2-1 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors
18th March 2006

Jeju's record isn't much better in the Korean League Cup either, having suffered two defeats in the last three games.

14th March 2007 - Jeju United 2-0 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

29th July 2006 - Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 2-0 Jeju United

TEAM NEWS
Jeju are likely to field a strong side for this game. The squad is well rested due to not having played this past weekend.

High scoring Jeonbuk will be without the injured Eninho and the suspended Lim You-Hwan.

Keep an eye out for:
Winger Choi Tae-Uk (11) has scored five times already this season. He has made 28 appearances for the Korean national side, scoring a total of four goals.

Striker Lee Dong-Guk (20) is a veteran of the Korean national side having scored 22 goals in 71 internationals. He has already scored six times this season.

Brazilian Luiz Enrique (10) has also scored four goals for Jeonbuk this season.

Midfielder Kim Sang-Sik (4) is the club captain and has also played over 50 games for his country.

25 year old forward Kim Hyung-Bum (9) is a renowned free kick taker having scored 11 already in his career which is a record for the K-League.

Defender Lee Yo-Han (14) played 17 games for Jeju in the 2007 season.

Round 11 Update

It was Jeju's turn to sit out in round 11 but results didn't go too badly as the side enter the break just four points off a play-off position.

With Gwangju unexpectedly at the top and Suwon unexpectedly at the bottom it has been a surprising start to the K-League season. Jeju can be satisfied that despite suffering a huge number of injuries, they are still within touching difference of the top six.

Jeju's next league match will be at FC Seoul on June 20th, followed by the visit of Busan to Jeju City on June 28th.

Jeju secure vital win to move up to eighth

Jeju United 1-0 Daejeon Citizen

Highlights video: www.jeju-utd.com (Internet Explorer only)

A 30th minute goal from "Happy Wing" Kim Young-Shin was enough to help Jeju to their first league victory in seven attempts and move them in to eighth position in the K-League table. The victory means that whatever happens next week (Jeju do not have a game in round 11) the islanders will be no further than 5 points off a play off position.

With both sides having struggled of late the game started fairly openly, with Jeju and Daejeon both trying to gain an early advantage. Ricardo looked particularly threatening on the left flank, causing the visitor's defence problems with his dribbling and quick runs.

The only goal of the game came 30 minutes in when Kim Young-Shin fired home a shot low in to the corner of the net from 25 yards, leaving veteran Daejeon goalkeeper Choi Eun-Sung no chance. It was a superb goal in an otherwise lacklustre opening 45 minutes.

Jeju sat back for the rest of the half and despite having superior possession, Daejeon were otherwise unable to create any clear cut opportunities.

The second half continued similarly with Daejeon trying to find a way in to the Jeju goal. The visitors thought they had equalised on 60 minutes when confusion in the Jeju box led to the ball being head home. The linesman fortunately raised his flag for offside, a decision which Daejeon appear rightful to have been aggreived by.

The decision seemed to knock Daejeon's confidence and from then on in they never looked like equalising. In the final fifteen minutes the home side created several opportunities which Ricardo, Oveira and Shim Young-Sung were unable to convert.

Jeju deserved their victory however it is clear that Arthur Bernardes has a lot of work to do if he is to make his side serious contenders in the K-League this season. The side can gain confidence from the ever improving performance of Oveira, who may turn out to be a good signing for the club.

Next up is Jeonbuk on May 27th in the Peace Cup, a match in which Jeju will be anxious to gain revenge for their embarrassing 5-0 defeat at the start of the month.

Jeju United Vs Daejeon Citizen Preview

Jeju United Vs Daejeon Citizen - 3pm, Sunday, 17th May 2009 (Jeju World Cup Stadium, Seogwipo)

Jeju host fellow strugglers Daejeon Citizen on Sunday anxious to gain their first win in six league matches. With this weekend's game being United's last league match until 20th June, a win is particularly important to Jeju's hopes of challenging for a play-off spot this seaon.

Daejeon have had a poor start to the season and find themselves in 13th place. They have won just once in the league this season having beat Daegu FC 2-0 on 4th April.

Whilst there are still injury problems in defence, Jeju's midfield and attack is looking strong. The side will be desperately searching for a victory which could possibly move them back to within a point of a play-off position.

Previous meetings:
Jeju have a mixed record against Daejeon, having won two and lost three of the last six games. On the basis of previous matches, whoever scores first will be confident of victory.

Lethargic Jeju beat Gangneung on penalties

Jeju United 0-0 Gangneung City (Jeju United won 5-3 on penalties)

Highlights video: www.jeju-utd.com (Internet Explorer only)

Jeju scraped through to the last sixteen of the FA Cup after beating a resolute Gangneung side on penalties. United will now face Busan in the second round on 1st July.

In a dire game witnessed by possibly a record low crowd of around a hundred people, Gangneung City spent most of the 90 minutes with eleven men behind the ball, daring Jeju to come at them and create opportunities. As has often been the problem this season, Jeju simply couldn't make their possession count and never really looked like scoring.

Arthur Bernardes fielded a surprisingly strong side for the game, however the players were clearly thinking ahead to Sunday's must win match against Daejeon Citizen. The team mainly avoided going in for 50-50 challenges and played the entire game at an unusually slow pace.

With the sole notable effort of the match having been Oveira's second half goal which was rightfully disallowed for offside, it was a long ninety minutes.

The penalty shoot out was exciting with Jeju scoring all five of their spot kicks with Oveira's sealing the victory.

Next up is Daejeon on Sunday with a win absolutely vital for Jeju's league ambitions.

Jeju United Vs Gangneung City Preview (FA Cup First Round)

Jeju United Vs Gangneung City - 7pm, Wednesday, 13th May 2009 (Jeju World Cup Stadium, Seogwipo)

Jeju will be odds on favourites to beat National League side Gangneung City on Wednesday in the first round of the Hana Bank FA Cup.

Located in Gangwon province, Gangneung is a popular tourist destination for Koreans. The football club was formed in 1999 and whilst relatively successful in the National League have never made an impression in the FA Cup.

Gangneung last reached the second round of the cup in 2002 when they beat the University of Ulsan 2-1 thanks to an extra time goal from Oh Ju-Po. That year they went on to lose 3-2 against Seongnam Ilhwa. In fact, Gangneung are yet to beat a non-university side in Korea's premier cup competition.

However the side have had a successful start to their National League season and find themselves in second position with 11 points from six games. They will also be buoyed by the knowledge that a win against Jeju would bring them three million won in prize money.

Jeju will be anxious to avoid a second successive defeat in the first round after embarassingly losing 1-0 at Changwon last year. With a home draw this year and if they win a second round tie against either Busan or Ulsan Mipo to look forward to, United will be optimistic of a good run in the cup.

Jeju reached the semi finals in 2007 before losing 2-1 to Pohang, if they can just go that step further and win the competition this year, they will enjoy Champions League Football in 2010 and the possibility of trips to the likes of Japan, China, Uzbekistan and UAE.

In the event of a draw, the match will be decided by penalties.

Previous meetings:
Whilst Jeju United have never faced Gangneung City, their former identity Bucheon SK beat the National Leaguers 3-0 in the 2005 FA Cup first round thanks to extra time goals from Hong Ju-Wan, Agostinho Petronilo De Oliveira Filho and Kim Dae-Hyun.

Team News
With a busy schedule throughout the month of May, coach Arthur Bernardes has confirmed he will be sending out a second string side for this FA Cup fixture. Jeju's key players will be rested in preparation for the important home match against Daejeon Citizen on Sunday.

Keep an eye out for:
Attacker Go Min-Gi (10) is the second highest scorer in the National League so far this season having scored four goals in six games.
Midfielder Lee Do-Kweon (8) spent 2007 playing for Újpest FC in Hungary.
Defensive midfielder Park Yo-Seb (5) has played for FC Seoul and Gwangju Sangmu.
Midfielder Kim Yong-Hee (29) has played for Seongnam, Busan, Gwangju and Jeonbuk.

Last gasp Jeju earn deserved point at Pohang

Pohang Steelers 2-2 Jeju United

Highlights video: www.jeju-utd.com (Internet Explorer only)

A 91st minute equaliser from a spirited Jeju United side earned an unlikely point for the islanders on Saturday afternoon. Despite an ever increasing list of absences in defence, Jeju attacked throughout the game and well deserved their lucky break in injury time.

With only one K-League win so far this season, Pohang were desperate for the three points and attacked Jeju from the onset. Brazilian Denilson was a clear threat the entire game and should have opened his account in the first 10 minutes when he fired over from 12 yards.

The striker made up for his mistake though on 23 minutes when he comfortably headed home a Kim Gi-Dong freekick. The goal came at a bad moment for Jeju who had appeared to have weathered the storm and had begun creating their own chances.

The rest of the half continued in a similar vein with Pohang creating the better opportunities but Jeju looking threatening on the counter attack.

Jeju took a much more attacking stance in the second half and this was rewarded just seven minutes in when an Oveira cross was accidentally slotted home by Pohang defender Kim Jung-Kyum. Whilst the defender will have been embarrassed by the own goal, in reality he had no choice but to make an attempt at blocking the ball as Kim Young-Sin was completely unmarked in the Pohang penalty area.

Both sides were looking threatening but it was Denilson who spurned another excellent opportunity. In an almost carbon copy of his first half miss, the striker shot over from 14 yards with just the keeper to beat.

Jeju also created chances with Oveira and Gu Ja-Cheol doing well on the flanks. Shim Young Sung and Ricardo both had attempts saved by Shin Hwa-Yong in the Pohang goal.

Just as it appeared Jeju were gaining the upper hand they were hit with a sucker punch on 67 minutes when Denilson took advantage of chaos in the United penalty area to calmly slide home a Kim Gi-Dong pass. It was his second goal in a game in which he could have already scored four.

Coach Arthur Bernardes urged his side to attack and Jeju's effort was finally rewarded in the 91st minute. Substitute Bang Seung-Hwan superbly headed Ku Kyung-Hyen's set piece in to the bottom corner of the net, giving the Pohang keeper no chance. The Jeju players celebrated a well deserved equaliser.

The game wasn't over though and Jeju could have turned an unlikely draw in to a victory on 93 minutes when Oveira appeared to be fouled in the penalty area. Despite protests referee Lee Sang-Yong refused to give a spot kick and the match ended 2-2.

There were a lot of positives in the game for Jeju - the midfield and attack worked well together and were clearly boosted by the return of Ricardo. Oveira, Shim Young-Sung and Gu Ja-Cheol all seem to have formed a good partnership and hopefully this will continue in future games. Once the injury problems in defence have eased Jeju will be a difficult side to beat and may well have a chance of pinching a position in this season's play-offs.

Jeju will be aware though that they have now gone six K-League matches without a win and simply must take the three points on Sunday when they welcome Daejeon Citizen to Seogwipo. Thanks to the unpredictable nature of this year's K-League a win on Sunday would likely move Jeju to just one point off the top six.

Pohang Steelers Vs Jeju United Preview

Pohang Steelers Vs Jeju United - 3pm, Saturday, 9th May 2009 (Pohang Steelyard)

(Live on KBS N Sports)

Jeju go to Pohang on Saturday hoping to end their record of five K-League games without a win. The hosts have had a busy season of Champions League football which seems to have distracted them in the domestic competitions - Pohang have won just one league game this season.

Both clubs had successful midweek games - Jeju beat Gyeongnam 2-1 in the Peace Cup and Pohang won 3-2 against Australian side Central Coast Mariners in the Champions League. Jeju will also take confidence from last year's visit to the Steelyard where they won 1-0 in torrential rain. It was their second successive win at the Steelyard.

A draw would be a decent result but after such a poor run Jeju will be searching for a win to move them back up the table.

Previous meetings:
Jeju have a good record against Pohang having won three and drawn one of the last six games between the clubs. The islanders have won their last two matches at the Steelyard.

Team News
After an excellent performance midweek, Gu Ja-Cheol is expected to start. With Shim Young-Sung and Oveira also available, Jeju will be confident they can breach the Pohang defence.
Club captain Lee Dong-Sik is unavailable as Jeju's problems in defence continue.

Keep an eye out for:
Hwang Jae-Won (24) is club captain and has played in defence for the Korean national side.
Veteran midfielder Kim Gi-Dong (6) played 198 games for Jeju United's ex-identity Bucheon SK and has scored 14 goals for Pohang in over 140 appearances.
Midfielder Kim Jae-Sung (7) made 55 appearances for Jeju in the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Brasilia (11) is a danger upfront, a video of a goal he scored at former club Ulsan can be seen here.
Serbia born striker Stevica Ristić (99) caused a stir when he was called up for the Macedonian national team. The player scored seven goals in the K-League last season.
Pohang signed young midfielder Kim Chang-Hoon (27) from Jeju last winter.

Jeju close in on Peace Cup quarter finals

Gyeongnam FC 1-2 Jeju United

Highlights video: www.jeju-utd.com (Internet Explorer only)

Two goals in the last 11 minutes saw Jeju comeback from behind to beat Gyeongnam 2-1 in the Peace Cup on Tuesday. The result means that Jeju will qualify for the quarter finals of the competition as long as they avoid losing by two or more goals at home to Jeonbuk on 27th May.

Both sides threatened early on in the first half, with Bang Seung-Hwan having a well placed shot from 25 yards out saved by keeper Shin Seung-Kyun. It was Gyeongnam, however, who slowly began to dominate the game. The home side had the ball in the back of the net on 13 minutes thanks to a Kim Dong-Hyun finish, however the striker was judged to have fouled Kim Song-Min.

Just three minutes later Gyeongnam took the lead when Kim Tae-Wook converted a Lee Yong-Rae corner. The midfielder was left unmarked in the six yard box to easily head home.

Things went from bad to worse on 31 minutes when Ku Kyung-Hyeong suffered an injury. Brazilian Vieira came on to replace him. Jeju slowly recovered though and Gyeongnam struggled to create any further clear cut chances.

Coach Arthur Bernardes adopted a much more attacking strategy in the second half, bringing on Gu Ja-Cheol for Baek Jong-Hwan on 52 minutes and then replacing Chun Jae-Woon with Oveira 12 minutes later. In the final twenty minutes Jeju attacked with purpose, trying to find the equaliser.

Shim Young-Sung and Oveira both had shots saved before Gu Ja-Cheol was able to hit home an Oveira cross with a half-volley on 79 minutes. The equaliser was well deserved and Jeju pushed on for victory.

The winner came on 84 minutes when Shim Young-Sung used some great ball control to get inbetween two Gyeongnam defenders to shoot home a pass from Gu Ja-Cheol. It was a well deserved goal for the striker who had threatened for much of the second half.

Gyeongnam tried in vain to find a late equaliser but despite five minutes of injury time they were unable to break through the Jeju defence. At the final whistle Jeju celebrated an important victory which marked the club's first win over Gyeongnam in seven games.

Jeju have the chance to all but confirm a place in the Peace Cup quarter finals on Tuesday afternoon by beating Gyeongnam FC.

It's a clash between two out of form teams - injury stricken Jeju having been thumped 5-0 by Jeonbuk at the weekend and a Gyeongnam side which is yet to have recorded a victory this season.

A win would put Jeju on seven points - almost certainly enough to guarantee a top two finish in the group and qualification for the quarter finals.

Coach Arthur Bernardes yesterday watched on helplessly as his Jeju side went down 5-0 at home to Jeonbuk.

With major injury problems in defence, Jeju simply couldn't cope with the attacking power of the visitors, who have now scored a total of 18 goals in seven games and find themselves top of the K-League.

In truth the score could have been much higher with Jeonbuk hitting the post and having a first half penalty saved by goalkeeper Kim Song-Min. Jeju created very little throughout and appeared to completely give up once the second goal went in.

The rout started on 29 minutes when Luiz Enrique took advantage of poor defending by Cho Yong-Hyung to slot home from 12 yards.

The first of four second half goals came on 63 minutes courtesy of a superb Lee Dong-Guk header from an Eninho cross. The angle looked too tight for a chance on goal but the striker managed to convert.

At this point Jeju heads went down and the team seemed to just stop playing. On 74 minutes Lee Dong-Guk got his second of the game with a sweet strike from the edge of the area. The Jeju defence failed to close him down or block the shot. And just a minute later three became four as Choi Tae-Uk was played through on goal with no defender in sight.

Lee Dong-Guk completed his hat trick on 87 minutes when he was left unmarked in the penalty area to volley home another Eninho cross.

It was an embarrassing afternoon for Jeju who played infront of an official attendance of over 21,000. The team simply can't cope in the K-League with so many injuries and are crying out for the defensive leadership of Kang Min-Su. Jeju have now lost four consecutive K-League games and find themselves in 12th place, albeit just three points off the play-off positions.

Things won't get any easier for the islanders next weekend as they face a tricky trip to Pohang Steelers. There are two winnable cup games coming up though with Jeju facing Gyeongnam in the Peace Cup on Tuesday afternoon and then Gangneung City a week on Wednesday in the FA Cup. Wins from these games may bring back some confidence to the Jeju side.
